Members of the Georgia Debate Union have been working with a group of inmates at the Lee Arrendale prison in Alto Georgia. The program developed in response to a prisoner's request to establish a debate team after reading the Autobiography of Malcolm X. The debaters at the prison meet on a regular basis and debate a variety of public policy questions. The UGA squad members participate in exhibition debates, lecture on debate principles and judge debates. In April of 2004, our debaters judged the first competitive prison debate tournament. From all reports, both UGA debaters and the inmates enjoyed the tournament experience.
The hard working staff at that correctional facility organizes the Lee Arrendale program. We are always looking for volunteers with a background in debate (you don't have to be an active member of the competitive debate program to participate) to work with the program. If you are interested in such a volunteer opportunity please contact Dr. Edward Panetta.
